International Women's Day
International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. IWD is celebrated annually on March 8 and this year in 48 countries and with varying traditions. In some cultures, IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day, where children and men honor family matriarchs with flowers or small gifts.
Keely has continued this tradition for 9 years with the women in her life - sending them newsletters & small gifts. Last year she expanded her distribution to include an electronic distribution. This year, Keely's distribution explanded to include 100 newsletter packets, more than 30 email distributions, postings on several social networking sites, and for the first time, a collaboration with SOSTANE on an audio PODCAST (available free on iTunes)!!!
Throughout the world, thousands of events are held to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from parades & political rallies, business conferences, government activities, networking events, craft markets, performance art, fashion and more!
Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and sponsoring external ones. Be on the lookout to see if Google changes its homepage logo this year, or check your favorite businesses to see if they are participating. The United States designates the month of March as 'Women's History Month', but does not officially recognize International Women's Day as a national holiday. Now that you know, make a difference for the women in your life. Actively participate in ways that ensure a future for women that is safe, just and full of opportunity!
